Chapter 2 Summary:Chapter two starts off describing the gap between West Egg and New York City, and the train that runs through it. Tom and Nick are riding the train to the city one day when Tom decides to take Nick to his lover's house. He takes him to George Wilsons garage which is on the edge of town and the area of ashes. George Wilson is Myrtle's husband, who is Tom's lover. Tom takes Myrtle and Nick into the city to the apartment that he keeps for his affair. While they are there Myrtles sister arrives along with The Mckees. The Mckees are described as a bad couple while Mrs. Mckee is bitter and Mr. Mckee is feminine and pale. Nick claims that it was only his second time being drunk at this party. Nick is also disgusted with the conversations of the people but still interested in it. As Myrtle begins to drink more she becomes more loud and obnoxious and eventually begins talking about daisy. Tom says not to talk about her wife and they end up arguing and he breaks her nose which ends the party. Analysis:In this chapter Nick starts to like this new life he has for himself. He is starting to drink and he is interested in it because it is so wrong. He is also disgusted with how the people act. This chapter has a lot of symbolism in the valley of ashes in between the two areas. This area shows how the people lack morality, for how nice and polished they look. It also relates to Tom's affair because Myrtle lives near this area and he has to go there to pick her up.
